I've been invited back as the guest author for the Secret Book Swap for the third time this August, and I couldn't be more delighted.
As someone who spends their life surrounded by books, readers and writers, I've discovered that this is one of the most enjoyable literary events I've ever attended. It takes everything people love about book clubs and turns it into something much more relaxed, exciting and inclusive.
Traditional book clubs can be wonderful, but they also come with a little pressure. Everyone has to read the same book before the meeting, and sometimes life gets in the way. Other times, the chosen title simply isn't one you would ever have picked up yourself.
Instead of everyone reading the same book, each person brings along a favourite book they've loved and are ready to pass on. It's wrapped up so nobody can see the cover or the title. Before the swap begins, everyone gives a short introduction to their mystery book, sharing a little about the genre, why they enjoyed it, what made it memorable and who they think might love it too, all without revealing what it is.
Then the fun really begins.
Everyone draws a number, and one by one chooses a wrapped book from the collection. Finally, like children on Christmas morning, we all unwrap our chosen books together to discover what we've received.
It's such a simple idea, but it creates a wonderful atmosphere. There is laughter as people try to guess the hidden titles, fascinating conversations about books you may never have heard of, and genuine excitement as everyone discovers a recommendation from another passionate reader. I've come away from previous events with books I would never have chosen for myself, and every one has opened the door to a new author or genre.
As the guest author, I'll also be sharing my own journey to becoming an international bestselling author, talking about the stories behind The Bigamist, The Psychopath and my novel Hindsight, as well as the work I now do through The Book Whisperers helping other people tell their own stories. There'll be plenty of opportunity for questions too, which always makes for some fascinating discussions.
This upcoming event is even more special because it is raising money for St Columba's Hospice Care, making it an afternoon that celebrates books while supporting a truly worthwhile cause.
If you love reading, enjoy discovering new authors, or simply fancy spending a couple of hours with people who share your passion for books, I'd love to see you there.
Bring a wrapped book you love, leave with a new literary adventure, and help raise money for an incredible charity.
I can't wait!
